Product code BELEXP01 will support up to 4 monitors, Product code BELEXP02 will support up to 8 monitors.

10. I want a wireless high speed internet connection and to share it out on a few machines in my office, what devices will I need?
Firstly a wireless router will be needed. There are two main types of modern internet connections, ADSL which comes through a normal telephone line but is then separated between voice and data signal. There is also cable broadband which carried under ground on cables similar to cable TV and is provided by companies such as NTL or Telewest. You will need either a cable/DSL router or an ADSL modem router depending on your connection, please check first. Then there are two main choices of speeds to choose from, 11mbps (known as 802.11b) and 54mbps (known as 802.11g). If all you would like to do is share the internet across several machines then 11mbps is more than enough, for sharing larger files between machines however, 54mpbs equipment is recommended. You will also need wireless adapters for your computers. These come in 3 main forms. PCMCIA for laptops (please make sure you have a free, available slot first), PCI cards for PCs, which go inside the PC (again please make sure there is a free slot, and also be aware you will have to go inside the PC). The third choice is a USB adapter, which can be used on either PCs or laptops. As USB adapters are usually plugged in via a 1 or 2 metre lead you have the advantage of moving the adapter into such a place that receives the best signal.
Other things to bear in mind:

  • Most routers also have 4 normal "wired" ports meaning you can directly connect some of your machines via network cable if wireless is not required on all machines.
  • Ranges of wireless can change dramatically. Common obstacles include walls and large metal objects such as filing cabinets, however all solid objects will cause shorter signals. PC World Business can arrange site surveys by an on-site engineer who will survey your building to let you know what wireless items you need - this is far more cost effective than guessing and buying the wrong equipment.
  • To increase ranges across rooms, or to provide wireless to machines in a room that already has a wired network point you can purchase an access point which plugs into your existing wired network and communicates wirelessly to machines with wireless adapters.
