QI deleted a trial spreadsheet application but now when I try to open my spreadsheet files I just get an error message: “This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Option control panel.” What should I do?
A In Windows Explorer, find the file you’d like to open. Right-click it, select Open With... and then Choose Program. This will produce a box containing a list of programs. Excel should be among the Recommended Programs. Select this and tick the box that says: “Always use the selected program to open this kind of file.” Click OK and you’re done.
Q I look at new software and evaluate it regularly. The problem I have is that my test computer is starting to struggle...
A Microsoft’s Virtual PC 2007 enables you to run multiple operating systems on one machine. With VPC2007 you set up a virtual PC, then load the operating system of your choice onto it – it can handle most systems from Vista to MS-DOS. Once you have that set up, you can copy the virtual PC as many times as you wish and load your new software onto it. When you’ve evaluated the software, you simply delete the virtual machine. It’s available for free from www.microsoft.com/virtualpc
Q Should I enable cookies in Internet Explorer? I tried to open a website and received a message that I couldn’t view the site as my cookies were disabled?
A You can do this through the privacy setting in your browser. It’s normally OK to accept first-party cookies, but third-party cookies are very often advertisements.
